Learning First works with schools and federal, state and district school systems to develop and implement reforms that makes a real difference in schools. We focus on the steps schools take to continually improve teaching and learning, and then identify how policies need to be reformed and how different parts of the system need to operate to achieve these changes in schools.

We work closely with systems to develop comprehensive strategy and implementation processes so school systems can improve:

  • Teacher preparation and professional development
  • Leadership strategy and development
  • Data systems, evaluation and accountability policies
  • District and regional structures and roles

We combine strategy and implementation advice to provide tangible reform steps and a process to introduce meaningful change. For example, we do not look at implementing standards on their own. Instead, we look at how teacher professional learning, school improvement processes and reporting, and data and accountability policies need to be structured to implement standards in schools so they make a difference.
